Today’s enterprise environment is typically comprised of multiple sites, each with multiple SANs, and each location having a common requirement to access shared data plus local information. This shared data can be proprietary, such as clinical trials in the pharmaceutical industry or confidential information such as social security numbers and birth dates in the medical and financial industries.

Because of the sensitivity of this data, and possible damage to the corporation in the form of financial liabilities or reputation damage, data replication at each remote site may present an unreasonable risk. Accessing a centralized data source may present additional vulnerabilities, as the data is transmitted in cleartext format between locations.
