CipherMax Offers First SAN-based Storage Encryption System Compatible with HP Virtual Library Systems

Customers Can Confidently Secure Backup Data on VLS and Comply with Data Confidentiality Mandates

SAN JOSE, Calif. - February 11, 2008 – CipherMax, the technology leader of enterprise-class storage security solutions, today announced that its CM140T storage security solution and KeyCruiser key lifecycle management system have been certified with the HP Tape Automation Compatibility (TAC) Partner Program for HP StorageWorks Virtual Library Systems (VLS) and is now included in the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) Compatibility Matrix.

The CipherMax CM140T has been tested for compatibility with the HP VLS 12000/300 EVA Gateway and HP VLS 9000/6000 series. Based on this compatibility certification, customers can now seamlessly secure backup data from unauthorized viewing while virtualizing disk storage as tape. Data storage virtualization allows companies to easily consolidate stored data, speed up data restores and eliminate the possibility of lost or stolen tapes.

With the combination of the CM140T product and virtual tape systems such as HP VLS, CipherMax offers companies SecureVTL™, a comprehensive tape security solution. SecureVTL delivers additional features that complement the data encryption process, including compression of data prior to encryption, block-level data integrity checking, and global key management for both VTL and physical tape media. By deploying SecureVTL, companies can address any security concerns that may arise by introducing disk-based backup technology at local or remote data storage locations.

“As companies migrate to virtual tape backup technology, they need a scalable, wire-speed solution that protects data stored onsite and offsite,” said Ray Kao, chairman and CEO of CipherMax. “With the completion of this compatibility testing, customers can use this system to secure data during remote replication ‘in flight’ and ‘at rest.’ Our CM140T solution protects confidential customer and partner information from unauthorized viewing, which allows companies to meet data protection compliance regulations, even while using third-party data storage management services and facilities.”

The CipherMax CM140T secures sensitive information stored in virtual tape libraries with standards-based 256-bit AES encryption and data compression.  Its fabric-aware, intelligent architecture supports up to 16 Fibre Channel ports (or 32 ports in a clustered configuration), and can be configured as a transparent appliance or using its integrated FC switching functionality.  The CM140T is compliant with the current IEEE P1619.1 draft standard for tape-based storage security that ensures the strongest available security and provides data integrity verification at the individual block level.  An inline processing architecture provides low-latency processing of compressed and encrypted data for 8-12 tape drives.

KeyCruiser is a global key lifecycle management system that ensures data recoverability with centralized encryption key management for CipherMax devices, virtual tape systems and LTO-4 tape drives. KeyCruiser enables the storage of cryptographically wrapped keys at multiple locations, offering a more secure, less expensive solution that can be deployed anywhere without security risks. Users managing keys from a secure user interface, can access them remotely. The software centrally manages thousands of encryption keys, security policies and system configurations with secure, automated backup and offsite repository. KeyCruiser supports automated security database backup and key migration between security domains.
