Bus-Tech, Inc. Certifies CipherMax’s CM180D with zDASD
Combined Product Set Will Provide a Secure Environment for Mainframe DASD
STORAGE DECISIONS – NEW YORK – September 26, 2007 – Bus-Tech®, Inc., a leading supplier of data center connectivity products, and CipherMax, the technology leader of enterprise-class storage security solutions, today announced certification of the CipherMax CM180D storage security system for disk for use with the Bus-Tech zDASD 3990 controller. The certification tests reveal employing CipherMax encryption solutions together with Bus-Tech’s zDASD technology results in a secure DASD product for mainframe environments. The two products were strenuously tested and had no impact on the zDASD controller’s ability to store and access in-line encrypted data on disk.
The zDASD emulates DASD (ECKD) file access to open system storage arrays. zDASD connects to the mainframe using either FICON or ESCON channels and can emulate up to two hundred fifty-six 3390 models 3, 9, 27 or 54 storage volumes with alternate path support. The controller connects to open system arrays via Fibre Channel for SAN or via Gigabit Ethernet in a NAS environment.
The CipherMax CM180D is a disk encryption solution that combines high performance 256-bit AES encryption of data-at-rest with an integrated switching function. Its configurable architecture supports 16 ports in a single chassis or 32 ports in a clustered configuration. Any-to-any connectivity eliminates the need for additional FC ports to maximize the use of encrypted data throughput. The CM180D provides non-evasive operation in existing disk and primary storage environments.
Data written by a mainframe to devices attached to zDASD via the CM180D is stored and encrypted on the open system arrays in such a way as to allow the data to be retrieved in exactly the same format as it was stored. zDASD with the CM180D makes it transparent to the mainframe hardware and operating system that open-system storage is being used rather than traditional mainframe DASD volumes. zDASD supports IBM and compatible mainframes for the z/OS, MVS, VM and VSE operating environments.
“The ability of the zDASD along with the CM180D to encrypt, store and retrieve sensitive data on the mainframe without having to modify existing procedures or file access offers an ideal solution to businesses as they become more concerned about data security,” said Ralph Armstrong, Bus-Tech’s vice president of product management. “This will put a lot of data center managers’ minds at ease regarding unauthorized data access.”
“Securing data that connects to mainframe systems is a top priority for many large enterprises in the financial, retail and government sectors,” said Greg Farris, director of marketing at CipherMax. “Companies in these industries are governed by privacy and identify theft regulations that mandate security of sensitive client, patient and employee information. The certification of our CM180D with Bus-Tech’s zDASD 3990 controller offers organizations a storage security solution that is unique in the industry and operates transparently within mainframe environments at in-line speed."
